If you have just moved into a new home, security should be a major concern. It is impossible to be sure if you have all keys to your locks when you first buy a new property. This means that it is important that you have the locks re-keyed. Re-keying the locks is a cheaper and more affordable alternative to having all the locks in your home replaced. However, it still allows you to be sure that the old key will no longer work effectively to unlock your door. Before you begin re-keying the locks in your home, it is important that you are aware of the most helpful tips that make the process easier.

Wire Tool

Using a lock re-key kit is the best way to re-key the locks in your home. Make sure that you purchase a lock re-key kit brand that matches the brand of your door. This is the best way to ensure that the kit has equipment that will be compatible with your door type. There will be a wire tool contained in the re-key kit that you will need to use to remove the old doorknob from the door. Make sure that the door is unlocked before you insert the wire tool directly into the hole that is present on the knob. Using the wire tool, you will be able to release the clip and the knob should come right off.

Cylinder

You now have to take the cylinder out of the knob. This is done best by pushing the cylinder out as far as it will go and then using the ring tool that is included within the re-keying kit. Just push using the ring tool and the cylinder will come out completely.

Key

You will now have to use your old key to remove the plug. You should insert the old key into the lock and turn the key half way through. It is then possible to remove the key from the lock and place the plug included within the kit into the lock. You will have to push down on the plug in order for the plug pins to be removed. It is then time to place the new key included in the re-keying kit into the lock. You will have to place the new pins into the plug by following the instructions that are color coded. The pins have to be placed in the exact order to ensure that the lock will function properly with the use of the new key. The knob can then be placed back on the door and the old key will no longer work to unlock your door.
